Certified Kosher Oven Separation
OU (Orthodox Union) and CRC (Central Rabbinical Congress of the USA and Canada), who provide kosher certification for our Shabbos Keeper™ and a number of sabbath modes through our ZMAN partnership, have approved a new to the world kosher certification for our double ranges and double wall ovens. This new certification is called “Certified Kosher Oven Separation”.
In Judaism, kosher dietary laws forbid the consumption of dairy and meat together. To define kosher more fully, these kosher laws extend beyond the food itself to the way it is prepared, stored, and cooked. For example, kosher meat and kosher dairy cannot intersect in the same meal, cookware, or appliances. Until now, homeowners with the space and means would install two ranges and two dishwashers to maintain this kosher diet separation. Others used a double wall oven, designating one cavity for dairy and one for meat, but were left uncertain if this truly qualified as a kosher solution.
With the new “Certified Kosher Oven Separation” certification, OU rabbis reviewed and tested a large number of GE and GE Profile double wall ovens and double ranges to confirm that airflow between the two cavities do not cross. This ensures proper separation in accordance with kosher laws so it is kosher certified to designate one cavity for dairy and one for meat. This separation could also apply to households that would like to designate one cavity for Passover use and one for use the rest of the year. The Passover cavity would never hold any foods that are not kosher for Passover. Many kosher families have a set of china reserved for Passover use. Now they can have an oven cavity reserved for Passover use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does kosher mean?
Kosher is a term that refers to food that is "fit" or "proper" for consumption by Jews who observe Jewish dietary laws known as “kashrut.” According to the Torah, these laws define which animals Jews may eat, specify how animals must be slaughtered before eating, and explain how the meat must be prepared. Kosher rules prohibit mixing meat and dairy products in the same dish. Unprocessed fruits and vegetables are generally considered kosher, while processed foods and meats must obtain kosher certification from a rabbinic agency to ensure these rules were followed before processing.
What makes food kosher?
Food is considered kosher if it follows the rules within the Torah about which animals may be eaten, how those animals are slaughtered, and how the meat is prepared prior to eating. Generally, raw fruits and vegetables are considered kosher. Processed foods, though, must receive certification by a rabbinic agency as to whether the strict rules were followed before processing. According to the Torah, meat and dairy products are prohibited from mixing.
What is the kosher dietary law?
Kosher dietary law is called “kashrut.” It refers to laws in the Jewish Torah that define which animals may be eaten, how the animals must be slaughtered, and how meat must be prepared before it is eaten.
What else do observant Jews do regarding cooking to have a kosher home?
Having a kosher home, particularly the kitchen, requires careful attention to the use of appliances primarily concerning two areas:
- Separation of Meat and Dairy (Kashrut)
The fundamental rule is that meat and dairy products (and the utensils/appliances used for them) must be kept entirely separate.
2. Sabbath and Holiday Observance (Shabbat/Yom Tov)
On the Sabbath and certain holidays, there are restrictions on activities that involve creating, extinguishing, or adjusting a fire/electrical current (e.g., turning lights or heating elements on/off).
How do I install the Shabbos Keeper?
To install the Shabbos Keeper on approved GE Appliances models of refrigerators, follow the instructions in this video. Installation requires no tools, and the instructions are simple to follow. To install on your GE Appliances oven or range, follow the instructions included in this illustrated instruction guide.
What is Sabbath Mode?
During holy times, Judaism requires restriction on certain activities, including the use of many appliances. GE Appliances has worked with third party kosher certification agencies, like OU (Orthodox Union), to develop Sabbath Mode features for many of our appliances so they follow Jewish laws. Learn more about using Sabbath Mode on GE Appliances ovens ranges, ovens, and refrigerators here.
Why does the Sabbath Mode refrigerator light stay on?
On GE Appliances French-door and bottom freezer refrigerators manufactured after April 2018, LED fresh food lights dim, but remain on during Sabbath Mode so that you can still have light at night to see your food inside the refrigerator over the sabbath but not have the light in the fridge turn on and off with the door opening and closing, which would violate the laws of the sabbath.
